Train the Mind. Train the Body. Train the Spirit.

If you lead a busy life and exercise has become just another time slot on your calendar... If it's starting to feel like more of a chore rather than something you look forward to and enjoy... Or if you've hit a plateau and find yourself feeling a little frustrated or disconnected... You could be overlooking or missing out on a primary component of what keeps people consistent and aligned with their goals: Mindfulness.

Now would be a good time to step back and reassess; remember why you started. We all have different goals and different reasons for embarking on our fitness journey. I think the commonality we share is the drive or motivation to do it, either out of want or necessity, which over time may come in reverse. Those who had a need to start due to health concerns and challenges, may find that they actually WANT to keep doing it. Those who WANTED to do it, often find that it becomes somewhat of a NECESSITY in their life. Why? Because it makes you feel amazing.

Maybe not during those last few reps of weight training when your muscles are so fatigued and your brain wants to quit. Maybe not during that intense cardio drill when your lungs feel like they're on fire. Maybe not on that early rainy Saturday morning when you want to stay under the covers, and eat donuts and pancakes when you get up.

But after? Oh yeah... The after feels amazing. The rush of feel-good endorphins. The sense of accomplishment. The knowing that you're getting better and stronger every day. The difference in the way you carry yourself. The difference in the way your clothes fit. The fact that your functionality in everyday life has significantly improved. The fact that you're choosing the stairs over the elevator now and you're no longer winded at the top of the landing.

It's about progress; not perfection.

So what does being mindful in our training mean? It means knowing why we're doing what we're doing, rather than just going through the motions...robotically executing another self-defense move, delivering strikes without understanding the mechanics or philosophy; muddling through the next set of 12 reps of an exercise without understanding how it improves our functionality.

It's about doing things with presence and purpose. It's about breathing deeply. It's about bringing oxygen to the cells in your body. It's about visualizing the muscles you're engaging as they become stronger.  It's about training your mind as much as it is about training your body. It's about showing up for yourself. It's about wellness. It's about feeling ALIVE.  It's about feeling GOOD.

I look at training and coaching through a holistic lens. I believe in training the mind, the body and the spirit. I am on my own journey with this and the days I find most challenging are those when I feel disconnected from myself, meaning sometimes I'm so caught up in the daily grind that I forget why I started and why I'm doing what I'm doing. I remember my first day on the mats like it was yesterday. I think back on all the things that used to intimidate me that now motivate me instead. I think of the challenges that I welcome because I know they will help me grow. Don't get me wrong, it's challenging; in every way, really. My training has been a lesson in patience, discipline and commitment. There are days when all of that is tested, especially when I’m extremely sore, exhausted, or recovering from injury. But then I think about how nothing else has ever made me feel so amazing. Every morning I get up, I know that experience is waiting for me; I just have to get myself to the mats. I never imagined this would be me at the beginning of my training journey almost five years ago. I used to run from everything that made me uncomfortable. Now I embrace it... Because I like who I am much more today that who I was back then.

Mindfulness. Awareness. Presence. In all that you do. It's a gift.
