I want to start out by saying that I understand not everyone enjoys exercise the way I do. I really, really, really enjoy exercising. However, I can say with certainty that there is a large portion of the population who enjoys being lazy on the couch eating comfort foods and watching mindless television as much as I do. It’s called balance. If you are on social media, as most of us are, you may have come across this cute meme in one form or another. I think there is some truth to it, don’t you?
High school. Many look back at it with great nostalgia and may even consider it the best years of their life. Me? Not so much. You see, when I was in high school, I was the proverbial 90 pound weakling. Well, actually I was more like 135 pounds, but you get the point. Anyway, as a nerdy and skinny kid, I suppose I was lucky to have avoided the trauma of getting bullied, but still, my lanky frame and lack of athleticism could not help me avoid developing some pretty fragile teenage insecurities. The summer after I graduated high school, with college just around the corner, I found myself finally deciding that it was time to transform my body and my boost my confidence. I was the youngest of three boys, with two older brothers who already dabbled in weightlifting. At last, I found the motivation to venture into the damp basement of my family’s house where, next to the washer and dryer, stood an old Weider bench, a barbell, and some iron plates.
